Mutiple Mortal Probations
Multiple Mortal Probations
Disclaimer
This article is not official, publicly held doctrine of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This article reflects my own journey to receive line upon line as laid out in 2 Nephi 28:30, and I have felt impressed to share my thoughts and feelings on Multiple Mortal Probations. Please pray before reading for the guidance of The Holy Ghost who reveals all truth and ultimately all error.
Introduction
Many LDS believe that as long as we are baptized, keep the commandments, are sealed in the Holy Temple, and endure to the end we will become Gods in short order after this one life. Of course, all of that is true except for the final statement, “in short order after this one life.” In fact, “after this one life” is false, which I will demonstrate in this article.
“Multiple Mortal Probations” is the doctrine of multiple mortal lives. The doctrine does not specify whether there are 2 or 957,972 lives—only that there are more than one. I have debated this issue only where those who resist this truth attempt to claim modern prophets have declared this doctrine to be false. However, this is not the case!
Joseph Fielding Smith’s quote is a bit troubling as he was a prophet of the church and seems to be speaking directly against “multiple mortal probations:”
Every once in a while, believers in reincarnation spring some story about persons who have returned to earth in another body. The Prophet Joseph Smith says that reincarnation is a doctrine of the devil and have you not read that the devil would deceive even the elect? Put your time on your work and seek for the guidance of the Spirit of the Lord and forget about supernatural visions that never took place. ~ Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, vol. 5
Yikes. Case closed? Not so fast. There are three important points to consider. First, Joseph Fielding Smith was not The Prophet when he published Answers to Gospel Questions. Second, the basis of the quote is false—Joseph Smith Jr. never says reincarnation is a doctrine of the devil. In the case of our founding prophet, he cited the doctrine of the “transmigration of souls” – or the doctrine of a soul of a father passing on to the son – to be false (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 2:307 or TPJS, pp. 104-105.) So, the basis of this conclusion is … baseless. Third, there were a lot of other early LDS, some apostles as well who lived closer in time and proximity to Joseph Smith who believed in “multiple mortal probations.” Here is one:
"What I do not to-day, when the sun goes down, I lay down to sleep, which is typical of death; and in the morning I rise and commence my work where I left it yesterday. That course is typical of the probations we take. ...This day's work is typical of this probation, and the sleep of every night is typical of death, and rising in the morning is typical of the resurrection. Brethren, this is the course we have to take; it is a progressive work from one day to another, and from one week to another; and if we advance this year, we are so far advanced in preparation to better go through the next year." ~ Heber C. Kimball, JD:4-329
Heber C. Kimball was one of the original twelve apostles—so this apostolic quote is closer in time and proximity to the beloved prophet Joseph Smith. Indeed, every day is a deep, rich symbol of eternal lives. We lie down at night, we rise again in the morning with the rising sun. There are seven days to a full period. Repeat. There are many more symbols, but this article will focus more on the scriptural and prophetic evidence of Multiple Mortal Probations.
There are more than three counterpoints to the claim that the doctrine of MMP is false, of course. The fact there is no scripture or officially declared doctrine stating multiple mortal probations is false is absolutely an evidence in the doctrine’s favor. In this article, I will demonstrate that there are far more scriptures and quotes supporting the doctrine of Multiple Mortal Probations than there are against it. Whether I err or not, I strongly encourage you to pray sincerely for the spirit of truth to guide you as you read. I know why I personally resisted some of these truths at first—thinking about just how long it takes to become perfect through agency, thinking I’m somehow minimizing the Savior … these are just a few. As you pray, I encourage you to be honest with yourself as to the true reasons why you may resist accepting new truth.
Part I As God Once Was
“As man now is, God once was: As God now is, man may be." (Lorenzo Snow, In Eliza R. Snow Smith, Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow)
Lorenzo Snow is both a prophet and a man who was in close proximity to the prophet Joseph Smith. Many LDS try to dismiss this quote. Why? Perhaps they dismiss the quote because it doesn’t take long to ride this logic train to its obvious conclusion.
John 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
Aha! The Son only has done what he saw the Father do. So, if God was once like man and God once was a Savior, well then that’s at least two mortal probations! So, we’re now three railcars down the logic train.
Railcar 1. God was once a man.
Railcar 2. We may become God.
Railcar 3. God was once a Savior himself.
It’s almost humorous how many people resist the MMP logic train. Some stop at the third railcar and say, “Well God the Father was not a Savior. When we become Gods then we will have a Savior over our own creation.” Well there’s a major problem with this thought—the moment that Savior receives all the father hath and steps foot into his Father’s kingdom, the Father would then be subservient to the Savior—the Savior having accomplished something the Father never had. Another problem is how can the Savior do the works of the Father and do only what he seeth his Father do if the Father never did the works himself? Also, who saved the Father? Have you ever wondered that before?
Then there’s the fourth railcar stop. One accepts the idea the Father was a Savior as well, but we certainly won’t be Saviors ourselves. Blasphemy! The Savior Himself thought it was not robbery to be equal with God, and we LDS do not think it robbery to be equal with God!
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
There are even more problems with this fourth railcar stop. First, the thinking here is that becoming a Heavenly Father is not blasphemy yet becoming a Son is? Second, there would have to be at least two plans of exaltation, two paths to godhood—one path that God the Father and Jesus Christ took and the one path we take. We would then be lesser gods and though we would be joint heirs with Christ, we would be the lesser heirs. The third problem is if we then have Only Begotten Sons who are chosen to save our creations, whose works will they follow? When speaking to their apostles, who will be the model they say they follow? “I only do the works that my father’s Father doeth. For whatsoever things my father’s Father doeth, these also doeth the son’s Son.” See what I mean? Let’s look at our railcars so far on this logic train:
Railcar 1: God Was Once a Man
Railcar 2: We May Become Gods
Railcar 3: God Was Once a Savior
Railcar 4: We May Become Saviors
Fortunately, both of these railcar stops that would derail this logic train are easily refuted with the King Follet Discourse, which we will cover in the next section. Before we get back on the logic train, let’s look at a couple of quotes from Joseph Smith that prove that there is a path to Godhood, and that the Holy Ghost himself is on that path:
But the Holy Ghost is yet a spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body, as the Savior did or as God did or the gods before them took bodies; for the Savior says the work that my Father did do I also. . . . He took himself a body and then laid down his life that he might take it up again. ~ Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 382
Joseph also said that the Holy Ghost is now in a state of probation which if he should perform in righteousness he may pass through the same or a similar course of things that the Son has. ~ Joseph Smith, The Words of Joseph Smith, p. 245 (From Franklin D. Richards Journal)
The above quotes demonstrate that there is yet another logic railcar—one that is easily understood. One must overcome a probation as Holy Ghost before one can become a Son of God. Being a Holy Ghost is a step in the process of becoming a Son of God:
Railcar 5: The Holy Ghost will be a Savior if he succeeds
The next railcar on this logic train is now very simple by extension:
Railcar 6: The Savior was once a Holy Ghost
If we look at the pattern thus far, we can extend the binary pattern that began at extremities that are now growing closer together. Let’s replace railcars 5 and 6 with the opposite ends of the path to Godhood.
Railcar 1: God Was Once a Man
Railcar 2: We May Become Gods
Railcar 3: God Was Once a Savior
Railcar 4: We May Become Saviors
Railcar 5: God Was Once a Holy Ghost
Railcar 6: We May Become Holy Ghosts
Isn’t this just crazy??? No! Some saints dismiss this or that quote as it doesn’t fit with their own personal logic train, usually derailed somewhere between cars 3 and 4. They’ll say this quote only has one source in one person’s journal and is unverified, such as the “White Horse” prophesy. However, the King Follet Sermon irrefutably verifies the above logic train and is a verified sermon attended by 20,000 saints—and is even published on lds.org (see further reading at the end for the link.) There is one path to godhood – the same path that all gods before us have taken. The same path we must take.
Part II The King Follet Discourse
The King Follet Sermon was attended by twenty thousand Saints on April 7, 1844. The sermon was given by Joseph Smith at the funeral for Elder King Follet—death, resurrection, and eternal progression were the obvious topics on the prophet’s mind. Let’s review the godhood logic train Here are excerpts from the King Follet Sermon with commentary:
I am going to tell you how God came to be God. ~ Joseph Smith, King Follet Sermon
Wow. That’s pretty clear-cut!
We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see. These ideas are incomprehensible to some, but they are simple. It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God, and to know that we may converse with Him as one man converses with another, and that He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ Himself did; and I will show it from the Bible. ~ Joseph Smith, King Follet Sermon
Railcar 1 confirmed. God was once a man like us. God once dwelt on an earth the same as Jesus Christ Himself did—Railcar 2 confirmed!
I wish I was in a suitable place to tell it, and that I had the trump of an archangel, so that I could tell the story in such a manner that persecution would cease forever. What did Jesus say? (Mark it, Elder Rigdon!) The scriptures inform us that Jesus said, as the Father hath power in himself, even so hath the Son power—to do what? Why, what the Father did. The answer is obvious—in a manner to lay down his body and take it up again. Jesus, what are you going to do? To lay down my life as my Father did, and take it up again. Do you believe it? If you do not believe it you do not believe the Bible. The scriptures say it, and I defy all the learning and wisdom and all the combined powers of earth and hell together to refute it. ~ Joseph Smith, King Follet Sermon
The Father was once a Savior! Railcar 3 confirmed. I certainly can appreciate the enthusiasm of our beloved prophet who wish he could declare this truth with the trump of an archangel! These truths are so beautiful in their simplicity, yet so many resist them!
Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power. ~ Joseph Smith, King Follet Sermon
Railcars 4 – 6 confirmed. No, really. There is one path to Godhood. The Holy Ghost step precedes the Savior step as we see in two quotes from Joseph Smith in the prior section. The Savior step precedes becoming a Father.
How long does this process take? The short answer is, of course, I don’t know! However, there is a tremendous clue in the previous quote. We have to learn to become Gods. We have to go from a small capacity to a great one. If you cannot run a donut shop, then you cannot run a galaxy or a universe for agency is how we learn. Knowledge is not handed to us. Experience is not handed to us. We must learn and experience to become gods!
The most important clue about how long this process takes is when Joseph Smith states that we must go “from grace to grace” and from “exaltation to exaltation.” As far as we know the Savior, isn’t the only being that provides grace in any creation (John 14:6?) Bear that in mind when you read the four simple words, “from grace to grace.” “From exaltation to exaltation,” to me means to the end of one creation where worlds and people are exalted to the next creation where worlds and people are exalted. It is my opinion that through agency, anyone can step off this train and accept their lot—however much they’ve attained. I do believe that Adam and Eve had attained their own world and gave the ultimate example of The Law of Consecration when they consecrated their inheritance—and their immortality—to the children of God for their progression. Becoming an Adam and an Eve is yet another railcar on this logic train of eternal progression. Think of the temple in this light. The temple is Adam and Eve school! Men are asked to close their eyes as though they are Adam…. but that is an article for another day.
Doctrine and Covenant 93 is the perfect companion to the King Follet Sermon. A careful study of D&C 93 not only reveals these same truths but also reveals the mindset of the Savior Himself as He reveals these words to Joseph Smith!
Part III Doctrine & Covenants 93
After reading from the King Follet Sermon, D&C 93 read more clearly.
D&C 93:11 And I, John, bear record that I beheld his glory, as the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, even the Spirit of truth, which came and dwelt in the flesh, and dwelt among us.
12 And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace;
Again, what is grace and who is the only being who provide grace. Let’s restate this. Jesus Christ did not receive the fulness at first but received grace for grace. Let’s substitute the word “grace” for “mercy.” And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received “mercy” for “mercy”;
13 And he received not of the fulness at first, but continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness;
Verse 13 is repeated in verse 14, albeit slightly differently:
14 And thus he was called the Son of God, because he received not of the fulness at the first.
This time, John assigns the title “Son of God” and explains why Jesus was called the Son of God—he received not of the fulness at first. But, that makes sense, doesn’t it? A Son is not a Father. A Father must be a Son before He can be a Father!
15 And I, John, bear record, and lo, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove, and sat upon him, and there came a voice out of heaven saying: This is my beloved Son.
16 And I, John, bear record that he received a fulness of the glory of the Father;
17 And he received all power, both in heaven and on earth, and the glory of the Father was with him, for he dwelt in him.
At some point the Son receives the fulness of the Father which at least partly consists of is all power, both in heaven and on earth and the glory of the Father dwelling in Him. I love the next verse, which reveals an indication to both the Lord’s desire and hesitation:
18 And it shall come to pass, that if you are faithful you shall receive the fulness of the record of John.
The Lord is about to spell this all out explicitly, but He hesitates! He stops and says, well if you want to hear more you will need to be faithful to receive the fulness of the record of John. He’s starting to spell out Multiple Mortal Probations, which is very likely explicitly detailed not only in John’s sealed testimony but in the sealed portion of the golden plates! If MMP is true doctrine, then of course the sealed portion would reveal the doctrine! The next verses solidify the Lord’s hesitation and desire:
19 I give unto you these sayings that you may understand and know how to worship, and know what you worship, that you may come unto the Father in my name, and in due time receive of his fulness.
So, the Lord breaks his narrative basically saying, “I was about to reveal more of John’s words, but you all are not ready. But if you’re faithful, this will all be spelled out to you in the sealed testimony of John.” Then He gives unto us these sayings that we may understand and know how to worship, and know what we worship. We are worshiping an exalted man! And, He reveals this truth unto us so that in due time we can receive of the fulness—this knowledge is an essential step on the journey to godhood, of receiving a fulness ourselves.
20 For if you keep my commandments you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.
Finally, the Lord gives the key that unlocks the mystery. Back in verse 12, John tells us the Lord’s journey to fulness began by receiving grace for grace. The Lord now tells us we receive a fulness by the exact same process—by beginning to receive grace for grace. Grace is Mercy: Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy! Just as importantly, in verse 20 the Lord says we shall receive of a fulness and be glorified in Jesus as Jesus is glorified in the Father. “As,” means to the same degree or extent. We are glorified “as” Jesus is glorified—the same way and the same process. There are not two paths to Godhood—there is one!
Part IV Perfection
Speaking of the word “as,” the Lord commands us to be perfect and tells us how to do it in the sermon on the mount—in fact this is the conclusion of the portion of His sermon that begins with the beatitudes, which may themselves be a series of progressive trials on the path to exaltation.
Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Of course, none of us can comply with this command in this life, but we know from 1 Nephi 3:7 that the Lord always provides a way to keep His commandments. But how? “Be perfect as the Father,” does not just mean, “be the same type of perfect,” but “perfect yourselves the same way.” Bearing in mind what Joseph Smith and Lorenzo Snow said about God being a man once, the teaching becomes clear. This is how my Father became perfect. This is how you will become perfect.
After the Atonement was accomplished in the Garden of Gethsemane and after the crucifixion and resurrection, the Lord visited the ancient Americans and taught them the same sermon. There was a subtle difference at this same point in the sermon:
3 Nephi 12:48 Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
Now the Lord refers to Himself as perfect for the first time. Though He was leading a sinless life, He could not claim perfection until after descending below all things and after achieving the resurrection as He does in 3 Nephi 12:48.
Alma 7:12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
“Be perfect as I OR your Father. Take your pick, for we reached perfection the same way,” the Lord is essentially saying. We are commanded to follow this same process. Yet, there are many aspects to perfection.
Perfection is not just living a sinless life. You must be the perfect judge with the perfect amount of mercy with perfect patience and even perfect anger. All these lessons must be learned within the bounds of agency and independence. None of these attributes of perfection are gifted to us—they must be learned by following the same plan—the same path—of exaltation.
D&C 93:30 All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.
The above scripture is from that same revelation in D&C 93 where the Lord is about to reveal the nitty gritty of Multiple Mortal Probations. God is independent just like us. He was once a man just like us. Nobody made him perfect. He perfected himself through the plan just as we do. He passed his final test by living a sinless live and by atoning for and providing a resurrection for a creation.
D&C 50:24 That which is of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day.
There is one plan and one path to receive light until the perfect day. From D&C 93 again:
D&C 93:27 And no man receiveth a fulness unless he keepeth his commandments.
28 He that keepeth his commandments receiveth truth and light, until he is glorified in truth and knoweth all things.
“Be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect,” said the Lord Jesus Christ. Become perfect the same way we did. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Part V The Levels of Mankind
The next time you go through the Temple Endowment, I challenge you to watch with these principles in mind—that there is but one path to Godhood and that being an Adam an Eve is a step on this one ladder. Peter, James, and John are also on this path. The symbolism in the Temple Endowment is deep and rich and indicates that Adam went through these steps himself. He was called Michael in his body and went back to sleep and rose again to be called Adam. This is a symbol of Multiple Mortal Probations. Lucifer tells Adam that this is a new world like the previous world they both came from. Multiple Mortal Probations.
The more advanced souls – the noble and great ones from Abraham 3 – are not noble because they just learned better or faster in their spirit bodies. We LDS believe that only so much progression can be made after this life—that without our bodies certain lessons take longer to learn. Why wouldn’t that principle apply to us before we took upon ourselves bodies?
In my series of articles on the Seven Levels of Mankind, I discuss the scriptures and truths that unmistakably reveal that the souls who have attained more light and perfection progress simultaneously along with the younger souls, or souls who have not attained much light or knowledge yet. The lesser souls need the higher souls and vice versa. To learn to become a God you must learn by doing – by administering, by teaching, by comforting, and by governing. If there is any doubt left in your heart about this process consider this:
There are eight uses of the word “overcometh” in the Book of Revelation as I discuss in my first article on the Seven Levels of Mankind. The first seven are given at the end of the Lord’s address to the angels of the seven churches in Asia. Each promise is a progressive step as evidenced by the first two promises aligned to salvation from death and from sin respectively. There is significant evidence these promises align to the dispensation heads themselves and with the laws given in the temple. The first seven uses are all covered in chapters 2 and 3 of Revelation. The eighth use is given near the end and is aligned to the level of Christ Himself. This short, simple verse sums up the logic train that leads to the conclusion of Multiple Mortal Probations:
Revelation 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
How did Christ inherit all things? He – Christ will be our God and we will be his sons. This is how he inherited. This is how we inherit. There is one path and one plan that leads to Godhood. Whether there are many or few mortal probations on this path, we can know with a certainty there is more than one.
Mosiah 5:7 And now, because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you; for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore, ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.
By becoming sons and daughters to Christ—begotten spiritually as King Benjamin demonstrates in Mosiah 5—we are taken with Him to His full inheritance where we become the noble and great ones assisting with the younger souls of His new creation that He will achieve through His Only Begotten Son. Some will be new to being a noble and great one, and others will have attained a higher capacity. Consider this principle while reading from the great intercessory prayer from John 17:
John 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Verse 3 ties in nicely to D&C 93:19 that was covered above:
D&C 93:19 I give unto you these sayings that you may understand and know how to worship, and know what you worship, that you may come unto the Father in my name, and in due time receive of his fulness.
D&C 93:19 and John 17:3 tie into D&C 132:24 which gives a very important grammatical clue as to how long this process takes and what the process entails:
D&C 132:24 This is eternal lives—to know the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law.
Back to John 17:
John 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Verse 6 is huge. Elohim “gave” Jehovah these men out of the world. “Thine they were.” How so? They were Elohim’s because they were ransomed by Elohim while Elohim was working out his own kingdom as revealed by Joseph Smith in the King Follet Sermon. “They have kept thy word.” What word is this? Could it be the covenants they made when they become spiritually begotten sons and daughters to Elohim the same way we become spiritually begotten sons and daughters to Christ?
John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
The Lord specifically excludes the world from this prayer, why? Because, these are the souls who traversed a prior creation—assisting with the governance of this generation of souls. They are the Church of the Firstborn. A church is a congregation of souls. These are they who have embarked on journey that began when they joined the Holy Order After the Order of the Son of God.
D&C 93:22 And all those who are begotten through me are partakers of the glory of the same, and are the church of the Firstborn.
The Church of the Firstborn are partakers of the same glory—not a similar glory. That glory is earned the same way as all who have come before. They are all High Priests Forever, after the Order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7.) Why forever? Because, they continue on as long as they honor the oath and covenant of their Priesthood to increase their light and knowledge until that perfect day—and from there they ascend to higher and higher exaltations forever as taught by Joseph Smith in the King Follet Sermon. The Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood isn’t just about honoring and magnifying your calling—it’s about magnifying every single aspect of your soul line upon line, and precept upon precept until that perfect day.
D&C 84:33 For whoso is faithful unto the obtaining these two priesthoods of which I have spoken, and the magnifying their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit unto the renewing of their bodies.
34 They become the sons of Moses and of Aaron and the seed of Abraham, and the church and kingdom, and the elect of God.
35 And also all they who receive this priesthood receive me, saith the Lord;
36 For he that receiveth my servants receiveth me;
37 And he that receiveth me receiveth my Father;
38 And he that receiveth my Father receiveth my Father’s kingdom; therefore all that my Father hath shall be given unto him.
39 And this is according to the oath and covenant which belongeth to the priesthood.
40 Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive this oath and covenant of my Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved.
41 But whoso breaketh this covenant after he hath received it, and altogether turneth therefrom, shall not have forgiveness of sins in this world nor in the world to come.
D&C 84:33-41 align nicely with all the points discussed thus far, especially John 17:
John 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
D&C 84:41 and John 17:12 both discuss those who break the oath and covenant of the Priesthood. Think about this next time this is discussed in your Priesthood Quorum. The breadth, depth, and scope of the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood isn’t just magnifying your calling. Sure, that’s part of it, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The heavens wept because Lucifer, a Son of the Morning—a being who had advanced through the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood fell. His Priesthood robes are still being worn by him in the temple endowment!
Part VI Conclusion and Further Reading
I hope the scriptures take on a new meaning after reading this article—that becoming spiritually begotten sons and daughters to Christ takes on new meaning. Who will be the noble and great ones of His creation of spirits?
I hope “Born Again” even takes on new meaning as revealed in John (Isn’t it interesting that the Beloved Apostle who had a full vision like the Brother of Jared has so many scriptures that reinforce these eternal doctrines?) You’ve read this story and heard of it countless times. Read it one more time with all of this in mind:
John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Let’s set aside for a moment the fact that Jesus never corrected Nicodemus when Nicodemus says, “can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb?” Of course, the sermon reads like Jesus is teaching that we must be born physically and spiritually, and I do believe that is certainly one of the meanings. However, read verse 13 again with all that has been discussed in mind:
John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
No man has ascended up to heaven except he follow the steps of the Son of Man. Like so many of the Master’s teachings, these verses are layered with truth. To see the kingdom of God we must be born again. To ascend above all we must descend below all as the Son of Man has done.
Below you will find further reading and links that I hope will help you on your journey of light. I may write a follow-up on this article depending on feedback and, of course, should the Spirit nudge me in that direction. I started to write a series of articles on the Book of Enoch and the Davidic Servant. I believe the Davidic Servant is tied very much into the revelation of these truths. He is the hidden servant himself, and I believe he is hidden for the same reason John’s testimony is hidden. Knowing who the Davidic Servant is, what his mission is, and most importantly – how his mission fits into eternal progression is to know these mysteries. He must be hidden for the world, and even the saints, are not ready for these truths yet. Below is an excerpt from the Book of Enoch that underscores Multiple Mortal Probations. Chapter 61 of the Ethopian Book of Enoch closely parallels many scriptures in Isaiah about the Davidic Servant who becomes a prince forever over Israel. In this chapter “the son of man” is referring to the Elect One, or the Davidic Servant:
Enoch 61:17 And with this Son of man shall they dwell, eat, lie down, and rise up, for ever and ever.
Though we eventually will likely stop lying down, this order continues on forever as this is the plan of exaltation.

I have written a follow-up to this article: Multiple Mortal Probations II
Below is a link to the Book of Enoch chapter 61 as mentioned above. Compare with similar verses in Isaiah that reference the spirit of righteousness, the words of the mouth destroying the sinners, the kings being judged by him, the woman in travail, etc. etc. There is also a link to an excellent book called “Melchizedek Seal and Scroll” by Alan Mitchell who shares prophecies about “Melchizedek” that are about Jesus Christ as well as apocryphal works that indicates Melchizedek and Christ may be the same person! D&C 132 speaks of eternal marriage and how that factors into “eternal lives” plural. Verse 26 of D&C 132 speaks of how those who are sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise and can commit all manner of sins other than shedding innocent blood will still come forth in the first resurrection and enter their exaltation. Few understand how this scripture can be – Multiple Mortal Probations is the answer.

12 And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace;
Again, what is grace and who is the only being who provide grace. Let’s restate this. Jesus Christ did not receive the fulness at first but received grace for grace. Let’s substitute the word “grace” for “mercy.” And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received “mercy” for “mercy”;
13 And he received not of the fulness at first, but continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness;
16 And I, John, bear record that he received a fulness of the glory of the Father;
35 And also all they who receive this priesthood receive me, saith the Lord;
36 For he that receiveth my servants receiveth me;
37 And he that receiveth me receiveth my Father;

I am glad that I found your blog. One thing that occurred to me as I read and finished without finding reference to was the scripture in D&C 130 about intelligence.
ReplyDelete19. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much more the advantage in the world to come.
Isn't amazing the layers of truth that are just waiting to be uncovered to the humble truth seeker who applies the promise of ask, seek, and knock and who executes the promise given in 2 Nephi 28:30 - to simply receive and more will be given! D&C 130:19 makes much less sense in the context of a single mortal probation where you either earn eternal life or you don't---how could you have that much advantage in the world to come if we all earn the same degree of exaltation?
DeleteVery Interesting!! thanks for sharing!!! God bless
DeleteAlaris, I am beginning to wrap my head around what you are saying. I believe much of what you are saying is true. I feel the spirit very strong when I listen to the talks by Hyrum Andrus https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc9lxZfhWfEQXi2foafVBcQ/playlists. He of course does not discuss multiple probations, but does open up the winding up seen and roles of Enoch and John. He mentions ever so slightly the Davidic Servant, but lets on that he understands much more than he is able to discuss in the official setting he is in. A few of the things he says directly conflicts with some of your ideas. But most I believe would fit well with it. My take is you an he are studying from different angles. Thank you for your articles. Very interesting.
DeleteCan you please explain how this fits then with Alma 11:45 that says the spirit and body will never be divided after the resurrection?
DeleteSure thing "Anonymous." It's really not that difficult to explain. It's much more difficult for folks to accept and take a look at their prior understanding and be willing to let that go to learn this truth.
DeleteBrigham Young taught that Adam entered the garden with a Celestial body. Whether you believe that or not, certainly Adam was in an immortal state where his spirit never would have been divided.
2 Nephi 2:22 And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end.
Give 1 Kings 19 a read and see if you can see. Elijah sits beneath a tree and eats, sleeps, and wakes up - fed by a serpent or seraph. Tomorrow's journey is beyojnd you today. Eat. Sleep. Awake and Arise.
God literally made our reality to reflect these eternal truths. Could God made us such that we don't need to sleep at night? Of course he could. Sleep is symbolic of death & rest. The day is the time for work. The night is the time for rest.
So which is longer - your body and spirit never being divided or Adam's body and spirit remaining forever without death in the Garden of Eden. This is why the Garden / Endowment is so symbolic - we are meant to learn when we are ready.
May I offer what I have come to understand (and am still learning) to Anonymous. "never be divided after the resurrection" refers to whatever "end" we choose. Autonomy is always respected regarding progression. We choose to progress, and at any time, we can choose to receive our reward and stay there. We can also choose to lay down our heavenly bodies and descend again so that we can continue our progression; it is our choice. Ultimately, we can progress to the point of our bodies never being divided from our spirit because our progression is finished and we have become Eternal Fathers or Mothers.
DeleteJust...just great. Loved it and particularly loved your insights. Thank you so much for the effort of this article!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jason - always appreciate your feedback! Here's a great scripture that many LDS do not take at face value:
DeleteJohn 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
I may do a follow-up on this article at some point. When I shared this on ldsfreedomforum, there was an extremely vitriolic response. I wonder if there is any level self-awareness that a vehement opposition to MMP is due to a personal distaste at having to "do this all over again" rather than a standard response to what would otherwise be considered false doctrine. Rejecting any seed because it doesn't jive with you personally is an effective way to limit oneself from further light and knowledge.
These scriptures are found everywhere and that one is so glaringly obvious! It's amazing that it isn't more common knowledge!
DeleteAnother great blog. I agree completely. A thought came to me one day driving in my truck going home from work. I thought about the so called pre existence and how satan was kicked out of heaven with one third of host. To me it sounded a lot like the millennium. Could it be that the anti christ is A Lucifer and wants to be God and after people fallow him he is destroyed and then another will rise up to go against Christ who is now the Father and the Holy Gohst or the servant will step forward to atone fir our sins fir thise who come down again and it starts all over again. And is outer darkness the deepest parts of africa where thise that are kicked out go and have no knowledge until they start race mixing again with A Adams seed. Which is Gids seed. Just saying. Lol
ReplyDeleteGreat comment - I've actually been thinking about the end being the beginning a lot lately.
DeleteThe wording in Abraham 3 is very deliberate. What you're saying + Abraham 3 + the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost certainly leads to such a conclusion if you factor in the fact that the Holy Ghost ascends at the end of a world and must be accepted by Israel for Israel to move on. Those who reject the ascension of the Holy Ghost crucify the Son afresh because the ascension / crown of the Holy Ghost as signified by the Holy Ghost (Hebrews 9) and this ascension is the crowning achievement of the Son - the Son becomes a Father by producing His own Son. If you reject this product - unforgivable. Look at the language of Hebrews 6 (Hebrews has many gems to this end)
Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
Verse 4 - those who were made partakers with the Holy Ghost (prior world's millennium) - then, Verse 5 - go on to taste the powers of the world to come (partakers with the Holy Ghost in this world) and reject his ascension....boom, done.
So we have to taste of the powers of the world to come, which imho, is what the Melchizedek Priesthood is to us. Earning a throne by sitting upon it (Abraham Facsimile 3) is an eternal principle that we are practicing ourselves. Those who are entrusted with power of the world to come is one of the prerequisites of the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost.
Reincarnation and multiple mortal probations are not the same thing. Multiple mortal probations assume that you will have another life in a new round of creation. Reincarnation states that in this round of creation you could have been another person on this earth. Reincarnation also says you can come back as a cat or a bug or a rock. It also teaches that you come back over and over until you get it right and then the ultimate reward for getting it right is to become nothing. That is Satans perversion of God's plan where you only get to have another life of you get it right, and living new lives is a form of progression that takes place in a new round of creation. The only beings who become nothing is sons of perdition. Cleon Skousen has a great explanation of the atonement that talks about what he was taught by John A Widtsoe. In his book he talks about what becomes of Sons of perdition. You can also find it in D&C 76. Joseph fielding Smith said nothing about multiple mortal probations. He said the doctrine of reincarnation is a doctrine of devils and it is.
ReplyDeleteI would humbly and sincerely invite you to reject this evil doctrine. I don't know why this doctrine is making waves in the LDS community...
ReplyDelete1 - D&C 132 was not written by Joseph Smith nor revealed by God. It is a creation of Brigham Young and possibly Heber C. Kimball It is full of doctrinal flaws (such as Isaac and Moses named as polygamists, the "law of Sarah," God commanding Abraham to marry Hagar, threatening women who reject polygamy with eternal damnation, the destruction of Emma Smith, etc. None of these things are supported in the scriptures.) Joseph Smith categorically was not a polygamist. He denied it at every turn and excommunicated those who preached it. Linguistic analysis shows that D&C 132 and The King Follet discourse (itself a construction from multiple sources, all of whom are known liars) are products of Brigham Young. "Plurality of Gods," "God as Man," and "Man becoming God" are false doctrines through and through. The world "exaltation" only appears 12 times in the scriptures, 11 of those times are D&C 132. It's simply something that neither Joseph Smith, nor the Book of Mormon, ever teach. Remember, both Nephi and Moroni said we will be judged by what is in the Book of Mormon.
Reject these teachings and concepts. They are born of the devil who would lull us into passivity. Preach nothing but repentance and faith on the name of Christ Jesus and leave the mysteries alone, just as Hyrum told the saints three months before his murder. It was this spirit of speculation that led to the demise of the church starting in Kirtland.
2 - Lorenzo Snow was not a prophet. We have no indication he was ever called or sanctioned by God. He made no prophecy, produced no revelation, and never used the Urim and Thummin, the instrument of seers. On the contrary, he was an serial adulterer and fornicator, along with most of the 12 that left Nauvoo and set up their polygamic kingdom outside federal jurisdiction. He also perjured himself in the Temple Lot case.
3 - D&C 130 is a construct of Orson Pratt, based on the notes of multiple discourses. We simply do not know if what Joseph said was accurately conveyed. D&C 130 also contradicts The Lectures on Faith's teaching of the Holy Ghost, so they both can't be correct.
4 - There is no extant manuscript for Abraham 3-5, and John Taylor was the editor of the Times and Seasons when this book was published. It would be unwise to accept Abraham at face value as it contradicts the Book of Mormon in places.
5 - "perfect" does not mean sinless, it means "complete" or "finished." No matter what we do, we will fall short of sinlessness, which is why the Atonement is necessary. It is only through mercy and grace that we are saved. When we have done our best, acting no hypocrisy before God, He will make up the difference.
6 - The Book of Mormon plainly teaches that "this life is our time to prepare to meet God." Alma said that upon death we either go to paradise/rest or outer darkness and there we wait until the appointed time of the resurrection. Christ also stressed to the Nephites that after death "no work can be done." There is no post-moral repentance or salvation. There is no kingdom-hopping. As such, proxy baptisms, also condemned by Mormon in his epistle to Moroni, serve zero purpose and have zero effect. I can point you to another dozen passages in the Book of Mormon that stress the importance of getting it right in this life.
Preach nothing but repentance and faith in the name of Christ Jesus. Avoid the mysteries and speculation that afflicted the church in Kirtland. Don't look beyond the mark, as Jacob warned. Faith, repentance, baptism of fire and water. Everything else is folly.
Godspeed, my friend.
I appreciate your comment. However, I have a testimony not only of the Book of Mormon and of Joseph Smith but also of the prophets who have followed through Lorenzo Snow to President Russell M. Nelson. I reject the notion that D&C 132 is a false scripture that the Lord has allowed to persist amidst the continued revelation to his prophets and apostles. I have read D&C 132, and I have pondered these truths therein and they are delicious to me.
DeleteI plan on writing a follow-up to this article where the centerpiece will be a journal entry from Wilford Woodruff that reinforces the logic train laid out in this article. I'm excited and saddened to write this article because although the truths are beautiful, there are so many who are vehemently and bitterly opposed at the notion of MMP being a true doctrine. That will also be addressed.
As for your # 5 point - here is the simple counterpoint. This truth is so simple yet is lost on so many. I won't even expound on this scripture but merely paste it below:
3 Nephi 12:48 Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
So did Lucifer once have a mortal body and then forfeited it?
ReplyDeletePossibly. We eat on the morning (usually) of the first day of the week. The Atonement is what allows us to traverse and keep progressing which is what Sunday and the Holy Sacrament represent imho.
DeleteLucifer and Satan may be two different people. The Lucuferians believe this. Pay attention to how Satan is dressed and how the same actor is called Satan after the fall. Also consider if we're watching Adam and Eves eternal progression unfold, and I'm correct in my understanding of mmp, then naturally they would be traversing worlds where there would quite possibly be multiple adversaries.
Yes he did, we all do. Lucifer was a Son of the Morning and of 'Exalted' rank. So not only was he an older soul than most of us,
Deletehe had received powers and priesthoods from Father because he had passed through other probations worthily. 'An Exaltation' requires a descent to a mortal world, overcoming, learning and proving that can be trusted to be loyal and obedient to the laws given in that world. This IS the 'Eternal Round' . Understanding the doctrine of
Ascension and Descension and Jacob's Ladder in Isaiah will give much insight to this if you appeal in prayerful pondering to Father. If this topic or these thoughts create fear for you, then steer clear of them. You are still as the 3rd servant in the parable of the Talents. You fear because you know not the God you serve yet. Spend some time in that parable and ask Father to show you your pitfalls. Once you learn the true nature of our Lord through the accounts in scripture... then you will have what you need to ask AND receive further light and knowledge on this or anything you desire.
This is very interesting. You have come to the same conclusions (mostly) that I have, using the exact same scriptures that I used to come to these conclusions. I have tried a few times to put it into words on paper but have not been able to.
ReplyDeleteExcellent job. You have a couple pieces to the puzzle missing that I have been able to work out (scripturally) I just wish I could put it in writing as well as you do.
Thank you Chris! I would love to hear your conclusions either here or on ldsfreedomforum.com.
DeleteSince we seem to see the same things in the scriptures, if it's ok with you, I would rather you message or email me and I can give you my simplistic thoughts along with my scriptural back-up and if you see what I see then you will do a much better job than I could ever do of putting it in writing and tying it together with what you have already written.
DeleteSounds good. You should be able to just email me after clicking on my alias. Let me know if that doesn't work for you, then you can reach out to me on ldsfreedomforum.com.
DeleteThank you for your interesting and thought-provoking article on Multiple Mortal Probations. I agree with much of what you wrote. Are you familiar with LDS author Julie Rowe who wrote "The Time Is Now,'' and ''From Tragedy To Destiny,'' - besides several other books? She mentioned in several of her podcasts that we experience many different levels of probation or lives on our journey toward exaltation. But she didn't elaborate on the subject, unfortunately. She also shared that there are many Satans, beside the fallen Lucifer of our world....i.e., there are Satans who are above the Satan of this world in power. If this is true, then it stands to reason that there would be many Saviours of certain other worlds also. Sister Rowe has had several NDEs and numerous spiritual experiences and visits to heaven which I find so fascinating and believable. She is spiritually and Holy Ghost led. I wish I could recall which of her videos referred to MMP but here is the link to her podcasts on YouTube. They are numbered 1-75. (C.K.)

ReplyDeleteI am very curious as to how sisters fit into this picture. I can understand being saviors, but what sorts of sacrifices/progression do you see for sisters besides serving as an Eve? It would seem that sisters would not be a Holy Ghost or Savior. Thank you! So very interesting! Just waiting for a witness. :) And of course there are soooo many questions!
ReplyDeleteI believe the dominion of the mother matches the dominion of her son / heir. I believe this is why Eve stands out in the temple endowment and helps me understand the recent changes. I just wrote an article recently about Horus and the Davidic Servant and touch on this point briefly. I believe the nature of motherhood reflects these eternal bonds between mother and son.
DeleteMotherhood and childbirth are powerful emblems of the Savior Jesus Christ. The Book of Moses touches upon this - how a woman suffers to bring a child into the world symbolizes the Savior's own suffering to bring souls into a new world. Blood, water, and spirit are also three elements of each birth.
How do you see eternal marriage fitting into this ? If I am sealed to my spouse in this life and then I have another mortal probation where I get married and sealed to someone else ( and she does the same) how then are her and I sealed for all time and eternity?
ReplyDeleteHello - thank you for your comment. As we seek answers they will naturally yield more questions, hence line upon line. I won't pretend to know all the nuts and bolts, but I don't need to wait to believe line 104 because I don't understand line 105 yet. Here's a question that may help with considering this important question: Was Jesus married to Mary Magdalene before? If Jesus became perfect across time, space, and creation, He naturally would have been married before in my mind. He must have been married before he became a priest, and he must have been married before becoming a king. We are anointed to become such in the temple which is catered to our time, season, and order. Can we be led to our eternal companion in the next life to whom we are sealed? Absolutely, yes imho.
DeleteAs for me, my wife and I absolutely believe we were led together. If this life is one's first sealing to their spouse this may not be the case. If they've been sealed before, then well that power is what leads us back together imho.
One final point. MMP reinforces the need for sealing. If there were just this one life and all ordinances that aren't taken care of now happen later vicariously, etc. then why is sealing so important? I mean, let's say I get married for time and me, my wife, and my kids are all worthy of celestial glory. Who is going to keep us from being a family in the Celestial Kingdom? Will sentinels put their celestial halberds together when he gather for a celestial family home evening? See what I mean? However, if we traverse from one round to another, from grace to grace (D&C 93 and King Follett) - I mean think about that. What does it mean to go FROM grace TO grace? Who offers grace? There's only one being ..at...a....time. If we ascend to higher capacities just as the Savior did, then that sealing becomes ever so important, and suddenly Israel being comprised of tribes makes even more sense.
This is the only reason for sealing children to their parents that makes sense. I've never understood the dire need for this otherwise.
DeleteWhy conflate MMPs with Reincarnation? They are not the same thing at all. MMPs necessarily connote multiple worlds. Reincarnation is a spirt inhabiting a body on this same earth more than once. Your analysis also lacks the understanding the Joseph Smith made clear in King Follette discourse and address to the Nauvoo Legion that there are multiple paths to Godhood. Every person's life and experience (even on this one earth) is unique to that person (only you are you). In essence, even my earth is not exactly yours. This is one of the advantages of the great plan of happiness, in that our world is not just a creation millions of years ago, but is a creation right here and right now during every moment of every day. God creates this entire reality for you and for me. While we may experience a certain "consensus" that is this reality (meaning it appears that we are all on the same earth) creation provides a unique reality for each viewer and that only one's perception of reality controls what seems to be a constant (laws of physics). If our spirit is ever fully reconciled as to our premortal understanding, we are translated and can control the physics of this world. But, to do so prematurely results in the downward spiral that Satan himself is on. Thus we ourselves have agreed to remain in this mortal state and to not taste Godhood until after the judgment of the atoning one, even Jesus Christ who was the creator and line by line had to come to that realization for himself becoming the redeemer of your world. Let's remember that the MMP is as plain as the nose on your face once you begin to understand that each person's experience is different and that God has a personal plan for each one of us that we ourselves agreed to.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment James! I'm not sure what you mean there are multiple paths to Godhood as it seems you are saying multiple people are on the path. What is clear by the King Follet discourse - and indeed the scriptures - is there is one single path to Godhood. There are offices and roles that must be taken one step at a time. Joseph Smith referred to the "office of Messiah" in his Elias, Elijah, Messiah sermon. He said the Holy Ghost is on this path and is in a state of probation where if he succeeds he will go on to experience the same or similar course as the Son....which means Jesus was once a Holy Ghost. Willford Woodruff recorded a statement from Joseph Smith that says exactly that (see MMP II article.)
ReplyDeleteThe logic behind MMP really is simple. You cannot be a Father without a Son. You cannot run a galaxy if you can't run a donut shop. Line upon line - precept upon precept. You cannot ascend above all without first descending below all things. Jesus said we would do His works and greater because He goes to His father - meaning that after we do His current works, we will go on to do those greater works that are in His future....but that is a long, long ways off. :)
Do you agree that MMPs and reincarnation are not exactly the same? But yes thanks for pointing out the straight and narrow way. Though I do not really see it as much a conflict. multiple paths as it is a perspective. In multiple paths to godhood, eternity is a key. The straight and narrow path in this world is the way of Jesus who is the Author of the world. But by the very definition of "being" - I am not you and you are not me. I cannot follow the exact same path to Godhood as you. "One door" or "one passageway?" I am fine with that. We must become one in purpose, but we are not required to become God in order to be a god. Put it this way, even if all roads lead to Rome, repentance allows for infinite paths to walk there.
ReplyDeleteReincarnation means you can come back as a flower or an animal in your next life. So yeah, that's not the same as mmp.
DeleteAs for paths, of course no two lives are the same. However depending on which rung of the ladder we are on, there is of course a central defining trial to overcome. One must me a Holy Spirit before one can be a Savior. One must be a Savior before one can be an Elohim.... Etc.
Have a look at the seven levels of mankind articles as I believe they reflect the seven steps to godhood.
Thank you for your articles. I believe much of it. My brain is still trying to process some of it. I really feel the Holy Ghost a lot whenever I listen to Hyrum Andress on this YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc9lxZfhWfEQXi2foafVBcQ/playlists. There are a few of his points the contradict yours. He only slightly mentions the Davidic Servant and does not mention multiple probations at all. However he was a professor at BYU and has read everything the church has that was ever written by Joseph Smith, or about him by those who knew him. He has some amazing insights. He also knows a lot of doctrines he is not able to go into because of the setting where he is giving these talks. You might find his talks useful and interesting. I have listened to every one of his multiple times. But again I can tell you have done a lot of work and studying and I believe you have uncovered some amazing pearls here. I am not certain that every conclusion is correct, but as I said my brain is still trying to process those things. This is wonderful, thank you.
ReplyDeleteJust an fyi. You don't need to post this as a comment. It is just something for you to consider. This Hyrum Andrus says that the key to understanding the book of Abraham properly is to understand that it is talking in terms of this entire eternity, and all of the worlds Christ has created, not just of this one Earth. He also says that the Noble and Great Ones (including Satan before he fell) were leaders in this Eternity, not just of this Earth. He says that Christ was the first born in this Eternity, and Satan was the second born in this Eternity. He also says that our Earth is the last Earth of this Eternity, the redemptive Earth, the one where the Atonement for all of Christ's creations took place. And all of the other worlds within this Eternity have their eye on the winding up scene of this world, because it is the winding up scene for this Eternity. He also said that none of the inhabitants of other worlds could be resurrected until Christ was resurrected. They could be translated, but not resurrected. His talks are very fascinating. As well.
DeleteI just to want to comment and say that I am a sister and have thought deeply about this topic.
ReplyDeleteIf men cannot become like god unless they are first saviors, and women and men are equal, and women also become gods, there must be female savioresses who also atone.
I want to learn more about this, but it seems to me that the saviors wife must be equal to him in power and knowledge.
I’ve heard people say that women “atone” through childbirth, but I think that is a bit of baloney. If that was true all the mothers in earth would be mini saviors. They (and I) have done no suffering like what a true atonement is.
Must women also descend below ALL things? Why wouldn’t they?
Thoughts
I believe the recent changes in the endowment and other changes to our organization are suggestive of this very truth coming to light. Though there's much to be revealed, I believe the bearing of curses may be central to woman's eternal role. Adam didn't kickstart mankind on this world - Eve did. And though some men choose to imply this suggests Eve was inferior or lesser than Adam, Lehi taught that Adam fell that man may be. I believe this is how it's done in every world. A woman starts the probation by taking upon herself the lion's share of the curses. I believe there is a very tribal aspect to this where earthly motherhood (so as above as below) points to heavenly motherhood.
DeleteNow that all said, I think there is one flaw in your statement - your given implication that "men and women are equal" - this is a potentially dangerous thought as the adversary wants to samefy all gender roles and outcomes. Yet, our prophets have taught us that gender roles are deliberately distinct and different both on an eternal scale and on a temporal scale.
I too agree women must have some larger trial, such as the Savior's, to become a goddess. However, let's not forget women was made from man for man as a helpmeet to him before any curses were established. So though the aspect of the curse where men "rule" over women may be redeemed (soon,) let's not forget that on an eternal scale, a husband presides. The devil has fought hard to get women to resent that eternal truth.
"R"...your comment/question is a very important consideration that I have tried to ponder for years. One has to wonder what does woman have to experience to become a God/Goddess? The only answers I've seen so far are given us by Brigham Young (who would know!)
DeleteIn his rarely seen talk, that was unpublished, he tells us that the suffering of a woman is not only in child birth but in having to submit to plural marriage. He states that is the hardest thing a woman ever has to experience and it tears her feelings apart. These two things bring huge amounts of suffering to a woman and that suffering continues and endures over great spans of time.
You can read his talk here:
https://adamgod.blogspot.com/2015/04/full-text-of-brigham-young-address-oct.html
So it seems men have to suffer infinite pain all at one time, as a Savior, but women suffer incremental pain over vast spans of time.
He also explains how it is that women are spared from becoming Sons of Perdition by this same mechanism.
It's really a great talk, and was only intended for the true believers in the Lord's Church.
Everyone I have seen preach multiple moral probations has always glossed over Alma 11:45 teaching the truth of the resurrection "...that they can die no more; their spirits uniting with their bodies, never to be divided;...". To be born in another mortal creation, your spirit has to be divided from your resurrected body. That's a direct contradiction to the Book of Mormon. I'm very uncomfortable taking that step.
ReplyDeleteWell, you came to the right place brother or sister.
DeleteAlma 11:45 Now, behold, I have spoken unto you concerning the death of the mortal body, and also concerning the resurrection of the mortal body. I say unto you that this mortal body is raised to an immortal body, that is from death, even from the first death unto life, that they can die no more; their spirits uniting with their bodies, NEVER to be divided; thus the whole becoming spiritual and immortal, that they can no more see corruption.
2 Nephi 2:22 And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained FOREVER, and had no end.
Is the "never" of Alma 11:45 longer, shorter, or the same duration as the "forever" of 2 Nephi 2:22? Or perhaps are they the same duration as "endless punishment?"
D&C 19:6 Nevertheless, it is not written that there shall be no end to this torment, but it is written endless torment.
7 Again, it is written eternal damnation; wherefore it is more express than other scriptures, that it might work upon the hearts of the children of men, altogether for my name’s glory.
Brigham Young taught that Adam and Eve entered the Garden of Eden with celestial bodies. If he's correct (he is,) then how did Adam and Eve earn their celestial bodies? Did they skip a few steps, or is there one path that includes multiple steps and multiple probations?
I have struggled to know what Alma was teaching in his discourses on the Resurrection.
DeleteIn carefully praying about and pondering what he taught it is clear that he was teaching about the "Final Resurrection", the one at the end of the cycle of Eternal Lives. For he clearly states that those who are "filthy still" at that last and final judgment, are cast out forever and mercy has no claim on them - (those people are known as Sons of Perdition.)
Heber C. Kimball gave many talks on Multiple Mortal Probations, wherein he clearly taught the principle of being "born again" multiple times in our progress of Eternal Lives and progress toward perfection. Each time we "sleep and wake in the morning", is a process of being "born again", NOT being resurrected in the final sense, where we can no longer be separated in our bodies and spirits.
The Lord also taught that our bodies are a gift from God and are "Temples of the Holy Ghost", and that ANY man who defiles that body, God will destroy.
So each time we "rise in the morning, after 'sleeping' another nighttime", we are "born again" NOT resurrected, though Alma states that some consider that "kind of a resurrection", stating that he can agree with that assessment.
But it is clear that Alma was referring to the final state of mankind in the great and last judgment, where it is determined who is and who is not a Son of Perdition and cast out into Outer Darkness, where Mercy no longer has any claim on them - because with full knowledge of their wickedness they choose to reject God's plan of Salvation.
Alaris...You have discovered one of the most amazing and important doctrines of the Restored Gospel. When understood rightly it answers SO many questions that otherwise have no answer and make no sense.
ReplyDeleteI sent you a private email that contains tens of quotes from our modern Prophets that confirm what you have written here.
They taught this doctrine openly from the pulpit on many occasions in the past. But like so many deep doctrines they discovered that the average member of the Church is not ready for this doctrine. If responded to incorrectly it can prove a damnation to them.
I hope to hear back from you when you've read the quotes I sent you.
Genuine questions: Would intelligence(s) of a lower order (say a single cell bacterium) ever be able to progress through MMP to advance in intelligence to ever attain to a higher order of being? Or is intelligence eternal in it's own sphere? If agency is ever present, why wouldn't a lower order of intelligence choose to progress to a higher form? Is that how we as men eventually attained our intelligence and ability to become sons of God or have we always been of this order through eternity?
ReplyDeleteChidote1: The only answer I have ever found to your question if from James E. Talmadge who taught that this doctrine does not allow for lower intelligences rising to higher states.
DeleteIn the Book of Abraham God told Abraham that He assessed all the intelligences and chose the brightest ones to be His leaders. That seems to indicate that intelligences are naturally in a graded state and that only the higher ones are chosen to become Sons and Daughters of God.
Abraham 3
22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones;
23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
It’s been a really interesting year and a half now since I first heard of MMP. I was in the mission field when my companion told me of it one night while we were out tracting. I tried to compete against his claims and experienced some hard days of cognitive dissonance afterwards. Yet, I couldn’t deny even from the moment he told me the way it all unconsciously fit together. All of a sudden I started reading the scriptures and seeing little hints of MMP everywhere in theme, symbolism, and phraseology even despite the fact that I was looking for facts to go against it. I didn’t know about your articles until about a month after I got home. I read your articles at a point in time when I was finally willing to accept the doctrine of MMP. I’m open minded and am willing to see flaws in MMP and there are parts of the gospel that are still a little clouded as to how they fit in, but my mind has been further convinced of its truth after starting the BOM over again and reading Nephi’s and Jacob’s and Lehi’s teachings. I believe that Nephi was trying to show us as much as he was allowed to about the Davidic Servant being the Holy Ghost as well as the doctrine of MMP. The doctrines of the Davidic Servant and MMP remain some of my favorite topics to study and ponder about among my own scriptural endeavors! Cheers to the amazing work you’ve put together Alaris! I believe you’re an inspired individual who is being used to unlock doors for others who, as of yet, lack the capacity to unlock.
ReplyDeleteSeems that a celestial being coming to this telestial life then discovering that they were here in such a unique position with a special purpose for life would be nearly overcome with the reality of the truth of the the plan of salvation and MMP. from TheDuke LDSFF
ReplyDeleteHow does the exaltation of women fit in here? We obviously cant become "holy Ghosts or Sons" What could women do that is equal in scope to what these do?
ReplyDeleteHow does the exaltation of women fit in with MMP? I can see that I can become a Heavenly mother and Eve but what can women do that can possibly compare in scope to that of the Holy Ghost or of a Christ?
ReplyDeleteI have counter your offer. I don't much buck soon.
DeleteEVP -- The best I've heard it explained is that whereas men must someday become a Christ and redeem a world, and hence they take upon themselves infinite pain, all at once, for those they Save, women, by their nature, suffer the pain of childbirth over and over and over, and they also suffer the pain and anxiety of watching their wayward children suffer for the things they do. And this continues off into the Eternities.
DeleteI've also heard it said that they may each have to be a "Mary", bring forth a Son of God / Savior and then watch the terrible torture he will have to endure because of His role as Savior.
It also seems that women, by their more obedient and kinder nature, don't have to suffer as much to gain Exaltation. You'll notice there is no such thing as a "Daughter of Perdition".
Thank you Alaris for the time, effort and testimony you have poured into this blog! The truths you share flow through my heart and mind as healing waters. You have spoken as further witness to doctrines I received as a young adult, truths I longed to better understand for years.I am profoundly grateful to have been referred to your blog and to have the opportunity to continue learning of the mysteries..
ReplyDeleteThank you thank you thank you!
Multiple Mortal Probations is a doctrine of the devil and those who teach it need to repent of their mischief.
ReplyDelete"Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of ALL MEN, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life.
And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.
And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil—for behold, they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their house—and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil.
Now this is the state of the souls of the wicked, yea, in darkness, and a state of awful, fearful looking for the fiery indignation of the wrath of God upon them; thus they remain in this state, as well as the righteous in paradise, until the time of their resurrection."
Which resurrection Amulek described as,
"Now, behold, I have spoken unto you concerning the death of the mortal body, and also concerning the resurrection of the mortal body. I say unto you that this mortal body is raised to an immortal body, that is from death, even from the first death unto life, that they can die no more; their spirits uniting with their bodies, never to be divided; thus the whole becoming spiritual and immortal, that they can no more see corruption."
You are born.
You die.
You go to rest or darkness.
There you wait until your resurrection.
The resurrection is he reunion of body and soul, never to be divided again.
Then you are judged.
That's it. It's plain and simple.
I can march forward despite his anticipation. MMP is a great doctrine from God the Eternal Father. And its simple. And brothers are in kept in their past doing what do.... full of anger... I will sorry those who have such sorrow
ReplyDeleteMatt Lorhke is not a Prophet...but he is a speaker of false doctrine! I have over 30 quotes of true Prophets who taught this doctrine openly for decades, including Joseph Smith! Here is just one of them:
ReplyDelete"What I do not to-day, when the sun goes down, I lay down to sleep, which is typical of death; and in the morning I rise and commence my work where I left it yesterday.
He couldn't have been more clear!
Amulek was talking about the last and final Resurrection, not the ones Heber C. Kimball was referring to.
Well, "Teancum," I never claimed to be a prophet, but nice try. It does not matter what Heber C. Kimball said. Heber C. Kimball was not a sane human being. There is no other resurrection than the final resurrection. Repent of your false doctrines and belief system and lies. You still have time.
Delete“He is Elijah who is to come” (Matt 11:14)
DeleteHe is John the Baptist.
Matt Lohrke...your comment is VERY revealing! You have denigrated one of the Lord's most choice Prophets -> Heber C. Kimball. Your contempt for the Lord's Prophets tells a lot about you! Your commentary, that is completely opposed to the Lord's Prophets, are simply fables in your own twisted mind. You are in open rebellion against the Lord and His Prophets.
DeleteSo, in essence, you expect us to believe that when you die, you will go to Spirit Prison or Paradise, and then after the reprobate life you have lived you will then be ushered into the Celestial Kingdom and be crowned as a God! This will NEVER happen. You will be born again multiple times until you learn to respect God's Prophets and allow them to lead you into all righteousness and you perfect yourself. Only then will you become a God.
Very useful Post Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteWho is Elijah? I am very appreciative of all the effort you have put into your blog.Things that never made sense are answered with MMB. Praying that you return to full health and vigor.
DeleteElijah, in my opinion, is Adam #1, Elijah, John the Baptist - Jesus called John the greatest prophet that ever seen....or something. :-)
DeleteOh ... and I thank you Mr. Anonymous! Speech is almost clear. My right side .... Well ... It has a way to go. Thank you for your prayers.
DeleteEther 3:9 &16-17?
ReplyDeleteSo I agree that there is Much evidence that supports what you are saying and it totallymade sense to me. But I know that truth will never contradict the scriptures and I've read the explanations of Alma 11:45 and it kinda made sense to me, but then Ether 3:9 &16-17 came to my mind. Here Jesus is in Spirit, He is not flesh. Any ideas on these scriptures?
